Ostensibly written by its narrator injust after Poland had come under martial law, Madame focusses largely on the narrator’s youth in Warsaw in the mids. This book, perhaps, filled a hole in my knowledge of 20th century Poland.

Put this one already on the list of this year’s best novels. This book made me want to learn french, memorise every book in my antoi, and jump up on a stage and a recite an unprepared and clever speech perfectly. Through these various tangents, however, we learn a great deal of Polish history and, more importantly for me, mwdame get a sense of where we are.

The narrator redefines precociousness — yet I found him scaringly easy to identify with. The time of Madame, when the narrator was young, saw a brief period of relative freedom, cultural and otherwise, but one soon stamped out. I’m not defending the Soviet system. Formulating remarks on Racine, Picasso, Lelouch, Beckett, Hoerderlin allows the narrator to distance himself from his feelings and understand the world of adults, their motives and passions.
